Questions
Answers to common questions about preserving your life story, memories and family history with Life Was Here™.
01What is Life Was Here™?
Life Was Here™ is a private life-story and family-memory platform where you can preserve your experiences, photographs, videos, recordings, journals, family history and other meaningful memories in one place.
02What can I put on Life Was Here?
You can write journal entries, preserve photographs and videos, record audio and your own voice, create a life timeline, build a family tree, document important life events and preserve the stories that matter to you.
03Do I have to write my entire life story at once?
No. That is one of the ideas behind Life Was Here. You can start with one memory, one photograph, one story or one question and continue adding to your story over time.
04Can I preserve my family history?
Yes. Life Was Here includes family connections and a family tree so you can preserve relationships, family stories, photographs and memories across generations.
05Can I record my voice?
Yes. You can preserve stories and memories in your own voice. Hearing someone tell a story in their own voice can make a family memory especially meaningful.
06Who can see my memories?
You control your privacy. Depending on the feature and your settings, information can be kept private or shared with family, friends or publicly when you choose to make it available.
07Is Life Was Here only for older people?
No. Life Was Here is designed for people of different ages. Anyone can begin preserving their life story and memories. We also have features and programs designed to help seniors preserve their stories.
08What is Story Time?
Story Time provides guided questions that help people remember and record important parts of their lives. Questions can be answered by typing or, where available, by recording your voice.
09Can my family participate?
Yes. Life Was Here is designed to help families stay connected to the stories and memories that matter. Depending on your privacy settings, you can share appropriate memories and connect family members.
10What happens if I don't know what to write?
You don't have to know where to begin. Guided questions and prompts can help you remember childhood experiences, family traditions, places you lived, your career, military experiences, travels, accomplishments and everyday moments.
11Is there a free trial?
Life Was Here currently offers a 7-day trial. Membership plans and their included features are shown on the Membership page.
12Can I cancel my membership?
Membership cancellation information is provided in our membership and cancellation policies. You should review the applicable terms before purchasing.
13Can I share my life story publicly?
Yes, when you choose to create and share a public Legacy Profile. Your private member information and private memories are not automatically made public.
14Is Life Was Here the same as a genealogy website?
Life Was Here can complement genealogy and family-history research, but its purpose is broader. Genealogy can document names, relationships and historical records; Life Was Here is designed to preserve the personal stories, memories, photographs, recordings and experiences behind those names.
15What makes Life Was Here different?
Life Was Here focuses on the person behind the family history. It gives you a place to preserve not only names and dates, but also your memories, experiences, voice, photographs, stories and the moments that made your life uniquely yours.
16Can I use Life Was Here from my phone?
Yes. Life Was Here is designed to work on modern phones, tablets and computers so you can access your account and preserve your memories from different devices.
17Where can I get help?
You can use the Contact or Support options on the website for assistance. We are building Life Was Here to be simple to use, while providing help when you need it.
